The Defense and Management Organisation

The association Pierre de Bourgogne, is the originator of this Geographical Indication project.

Established in 1996, its purpose is to promote, communicate and advise about Burgundy limestone, its craftsmen and its applications. It is partially funded by the Conseil regional de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

It integrates artisans, stonemasons, sculptors, quarriers (stone extraction), manufacturers (shaping and finishing stone by machine), fixers and stone roof tilers. At an EGM which took place on 1 July 2016, the association modified its statutes to define its objectives as a Defence and Management Organisation. The Defence and Management Organisation (ODG) is the depositary of the certification "IG Pierre de Bourgogne". It represents the general interests of companies concerning the IG.

The association is a member of the AFIGIA, French Association of the Industrial and Artisanal Geographical Indications. Created on 22 January 2015, this association regroups the ODG representing French renowned traditional products. The AFIGIA allows all these sectors to meet, to exchange and pool their actions to obtain a GI or exchange their experiences when the GI is certified.  The common aim is to protect the emblematic products rooted in a territory and requiring a unique know-how.

Member sectors: knives from Laguiole, lace from Le Puy, garnet from Perpignan, Basque linen, Pierre de Bourgogne, Limoges porcelain, pottery from Alsace, Pottery from Soufflenheim, Pottery from Betschdorf, Soap from Marseille, Brittany granite, Stone from Arudy, Stone from the Dordogne, Tapestries and carpets from Aubusson, Chairs from Liffol, Santons from Provence, Charentaise (slippers) from Charente Périgord.

Defence and Management Organisation Missions

It elaborates the code of practice, submits it for certification by the INPI and supervises its application by the operators

It is the direct go-between for the operators, the INPI and the control organisation and assures the liaison between the different parties.

It transfers the right to use the Geographic Indication to the operators whilst complying with the code of practice.

It regularly updates the list of operators and transfers the updates to the INPI which then publishes them in the Official Bulletin of Intellectual Property (BOPI).

It insures that the control organisation is effectively controlling the operators according to the conditions established in the code of practice.

It informs the INPI about the results of the controls and, if necessary, the corrective measures undertaken by the operators.

It can exclude any operator that does not respect the code of practice and which has not put into place the necessary corrective measures.

It undertakes actions for the defence, the protection and the valorisation of the Geographical Indication, of the products and the know-how which are associated with it.

The Defence and Management Organisation is audited every year by Certipaq, the certification organisation.
